Recording Information:
The audio files do not need to be high quality.
Audio quality doesn't matter to us. A phone recording is absolutely fine as long as we can hear you clearly.
For the recordings that use backing tracks, please ensure you are clearly audible over the track.
When recording yourself on your phone, we suggest you use a separate device/laptop/phone to play the track you are singing along to.
What matters is that we hear your actual voice. Please send raw takes with no pitch or time correction, or any other editing/processing. We're listening for how you really sound, and edited recordings tell us nothing useful. Anything that has been tuned or produced will be set aside.
Naming Your Files
Please ensure your files are clearly named as follows:
Your Name - Song Title
e.g

Application
materials & Information
Please record all of the following excerpts. A phone recording is fine.
Please ensure your files are clearly named as follows:
Your Name - Song Choice.mp3
Your Name - Goodbye England.mp3
Your Name - Little Organ Fugue.mp3
Your Name - The Song of Purple Summer.mp3
Song Choice
Please submit an unaccompanied, non-classical song of your choosing that best showcases the type of singer you are. No longer than a minute or so.
Please ensure that the recording is a raw take, with no pitch or time correction, added reverb or any other editing.
Goodbye England
Please sing the solo line marked ‘Your Line’. You should record yourself singing along to the track called Goodbye England Cue and Backing. Make sure your voice can be heard clearly over the backing. There are other materials in the folder to assist with the learning. As you’ll hear from the Vocal Example file, Imogen has been slightly freer than the written rhythms in order for the solo to sound more natural and speech-like. You are welcome to do the rhythms exactly as written or to imitate Imogen, or sing your own phrasing, but we want to hear a good sense of pulse and time. Ultimately we want the phrasing to sound natural but still very musical!
Little Organ Fugue
Please sing the S2 line marked ‘Your Line’. You should record yourself a cappella/ unaccompanied. There are materials in the folder to assist with the learning.
As you’ll hear from the Vocal Example file, this is sung with no vibrato, a soft airy tone, and to a vowel that rhymes with the French word ‘bal’. The consonants should be extremely soft - no hard/wet ‘b’ or ‘d’ sounds and each note should have a slight bounce and decay. Please go with the tempo indicated in the score and learning examples.
The Song of Purple Summer
Please sing the S1 line marked ‘Your Line’. You should record yourself singing along to the track called The Song of Purple Summer Cue and Backing. Make sure your voice can be heard clearly over the backing. There are other materials in the folder to assist with the learning. As you’ll hear from the Vocal Example file, here you are singing a soaring choral line. We are looking for a pure tone, almost like a boy treble. The ‘doon’ should be light and slightly bouncy but no hard/wet consonant.
